We aim to exceed the requirements of the National Literacy Strategy. The NLS means that a personal “reading book” is no longer the main way of teaching reading.
Each child in Key Stage 1 has approximately 5 hours per week of ‘English’. During this time the children will be taught the skills of reading in varying ways (look and say, phonics, context clues). This will be done using “Big Books”, interactive whiteboard texts, class teaching and group reading sessions.
The children will also have a home reading book which we expect the child’s parents/carers to read with them (or hear them read dependant on the child) and then to comment in the child's school diary. This is not the class reading book, but a home-school link to enable us to work together. Additional support programmes are run throughout the year groups and children will be allocated a place as their developmenbt dictates.
Homework will also be set in this subject which parents/carers can support.
In Key Stage 2 the time allocated to ‘English’ is approximately 6 hours per week.
